| Summary
Roaches are insects. Adults have wings
but seldom fly in the northeast. Important types are the
German cockroach (small - to about 1 inch), and the
American cockroach (large - can be over 2 inches). Other
large roaches seen indoors are the oriental and Asian
cockroaches. The large roaches are not often seen in
private residences in eastern Massachusetts, but are
fairly common in multiple-family dwellings and
commercial structures.
There are many roaches that live
outdoors and some of these occasionally wander indoors.
There are effective control measures for roaches that
are nontoxic to people. In our area, these control
measures have reduced the number of households with
roaches, and have made it possible to bring an
infestation under good control.
German Cockroach
The German cockroach is brownish and up to 1 inch
long. It thrives in unclean areas and, in large numbers,
produces a distinctive roach smell. Although German
roaches have wings, they do not fly. German roaches are
also known as "Croton bugs".
American Cockroach
The American cockroach can be over 2 inches long. It
is also known as the "palmetto bug" and
"water bug". These roaches are not as common
in houses as German cockroaches, but are rather common
in areas where trash collects and in some industrial
settings. American cockroaches are common in the
southern United States, but less seen in the north.
These roaches have wings and do fly occasionally.
